Hello,
When Flip Flop Frog is set in defense position, and then attacked, does it's return effect activate because it was flipped up, even if it's the only card on my opponents side of the field?
ie: My opponent has a face down Flip Flop Frog that she set on the field in defense. I attack it with a Chainsaw Insect Chainsaw destroys it but not before flipping it face up, does Flip Flop Frog's effect activate before it's destroyed thus sending one of my monsters back to my hand
No no, I meant the question is still unanswered. The rules say that flip effects (and pseudo flip effects) happen before the monster is sent to the graveyard, but does not affect monsters already destroyed. This is why Penguin Soldier can't return himself if destroyed in battle. However, Flip Flop Frog isn't "affected" by the flip effect, he is just face up on the field at that time, which is all that is required for the effect's resolution.
During the "resolve effects" portion of the Damage Step, the monster is still considered to be face-up on the field. However, it is also considered to be destroyed (but not sent to the Graveyard yet), and cards which have already been destroyed can't be returned to the hand/Deck. "Penguin Soldier" and "Flip Flop Frog" cannot return themselves to the Deck since they are already destroyed. However, "Penguin Soldier" and "Flip Flop Frog" are still face-up on the field, so "Flip Flop Frog" will still count itself for its effect
thanks
